Covid 19 : Omicron

Omicron is a highly contagious variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19. It was first identified or detected in South Africa in November 2021 and quickly spread to other parts of the world. Omicron has several mutations in the spike protein of the virus, which allows it to spread more easily than previous variants. Early research suggests that it may also be less susceptible to some COVID-19 vaccines and may cause milder Omicron symptoms in some people.

Given the number of reported cases of people infected with Omicron, we must take extra steps to avoid getting the infection. The preventative strategies are the same as they are for the other coronavirus variants. People should not disregard the government's recommended safeguards and instructions for effective protection.

• Wear a mask and make sure it covers your nose and mouth
• Limit your travel outside or avoid it when not necessary
• Avoid large gatherings, crowded or poorly ventilated spaces
• Maintain a physical distance of at least 3 feet or 1 meter from others
• Practise personal hygiene and wash your hands regularly
• Get vaccinated or take a booster shot as soon as it's your turn

The Omicron symptoms are similar to those of other variants and can range from mild to severe. Common symptoms include cough, fever, fatigue, body aches, and loss of taste or smell. 

However, some people infected with Omicron have reported additional symptoms such as sore throat, nasal congestion, and diarrhoea. Unlike earlier variants, some people infected with Omicron may experience only mild or no symptoms at all, making it harder to identify and control the spread of the virus. It is important to note that the symptoms can vary from person to person. 

Anyone who suspects they may have been exposed to the virus should get tested and follow public health guidelines to protect themselves and others.
