Introduction

India has a large population that has seen many circumstances. However, it has always strived to become better and come up with new ways and means for the welfare of society. Our government has always come up with solutions that align with the needs of the larger public.

Under the vision of Universal Health Coverage, the flagship campaign, Ayushman Bharat, was launched in 2018 by the government of India. It catered to the objective of providing healthcare services to all and also envisioned meeting sustainable development goals. It was not only a revolutionary step but also one of the largest government-funded healthcare schemes in the world.

Every eligible Indian family can get a healthcare cover of Rs. 5 Lacs under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana scheme (PM-Jay), which is the largest in the world in terms of health insurance. The scheme has about 50 crore people it caters to and gives them access to secondary and tertiary hospitalisation care. It accounts for about 40% of vulnerable and poor Indian families. The eligibility for the scheme comes divided among both urban and rural areas.

Ayushman Bharat Yojana

Ayushman Bharat has emerged as one of the largest government-funded schemes ever to exist and has only borne better outputs since its beginning.

There are two components of this comprehensive scheme:

  1. Health and Wellness Centres  - Since the launch of the scheme in 2018, the government initiated the creation of about 1,50,000 health and wellness centres. The process involved the upgradation of the sub-centres and primary health centres that already existed. These aim at providing primary healthcare in all corners of the country. With a prime focus on maternal and child care, the HWCs dispense affordable medical care within the stipulated time of as low as 30 mins.

  1. Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) - The second component and perhaps the revolutionary bit that changed the picture of healthcare in India is the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. It envisioned and executed the aim of providing all-inclusive healthcare services and health insurance to the larger public. With constant aid from the government, more and more people were able to avail the PM-JAY, and the status of healthcare in our country only became better.

When the pandemic hit, both of these components proved to be highly useful as the need for these was gravely felt. Ayushman Bharat, with a vision of catering to the medical needs of all the citizens of the country, has proved to be nothing short of a milestone in the healthcare of India.
