Tax Implications of Health Insurance

Share

Health insurance is an essential form of financial protection against medical expenses, providing coverage for hospitalisation, doctor’s visits, and any other medical costs that may arise. Understanding medical insurance's tax implications are crucial to make the most of your policy. A health insurance policy for family can help you save taxes and provide support in medical emergencies.

In India, two significant tax deductions are available on medical insurance premiums. The first is Section 80D of the ITA (Income Tax Act 1961), that allows for a deduction of up to Rs. 25,000 for individuals and up to Rs. 30,000 for senior citizens for healthcare insurance premiums paid for self, spouse, and children. The second is Section 80DDB, which allows for a Rs. 40,000 deduction for medical expenses incurred for certain diseases such as cancer, AIDS, cerebral palsy, and other neurological conditions.

This blog will discuss the different tax implications of healthcare policies in India.

For Medical Insurance Premiums

The insurance premiums paid towards health policies are qualified for tax deductions under ITA (Income Tax Act) 1961, Section 80D. The tax deduction is available for both individual and family policies. The maximum tax deduction is Rs. 25,000 for individual policies and Rs. 50,000 for family policies. Additionally, if the policyholder is a senior citizen (above 60), the maximum tax deduction allowed is Rs. 50,000 for individual policies and Rs. 1,00,000 for family policies.

For Health Insurance Reimbursements

Medical insurance reimbursements received by the policyholder are excused from tax under Section 10(10D) of the Income Tax Act, 1961. This exemption is available for all types of healthcare insurance policies, including group insurance policies provided by employers. However, the exemption only applies to the amount received to reimburse medical expenses.

For Critical Illness Riders

Critical illness riders are add-ons to insurance policies that provide coverage for specific critical illnesses. The premiums paid towards critical illness riders are also eligible for tax deductions under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act, 1961. However, if the policyholder receives a lump sum payment from the critical illness rider, it will be treated as taxable income.

For Maternity Cover

It is an optional add-on to insurance policies that cover maternity-related expenses. Section 80D of the Income Tax Act (ITA) of 1961 allows for tax deductions on maternity insurance premiums. However, the tax deduction is available only for the policyholder, not the spouse or dependent children.

For Group Health Insurance

Group health policies provided by the employers are not taxable for the employees. However, the medical insurance premium paid by the employer towards group health insurance policies exceeds Rs. 15,000 per annum per employee. In that case, the excess amount will be treated as a perquisite and taxable part of the employee's salary.

It is important to note that these tax implications are subject to change as per the amendments in the Income Tax Act 1961. It is advisable to consult a tax expert or a financial planner for further advice on the tax implications of health insurance.

In addition to these deductions, the government of India also provides tax benefits for health insurance policies taken out through their Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) scheme. Under this scheme, the premiums paid for health insurance policies are exempt from tax up to Rs. 5,000 per year. This exemption is available to all individuals and families covered under the PMJAY scheme.

It is also necessary to note that the premiums paid for health policies are not eligible for deduction under ITA Section 80C. It means the premiums paid for healthcare insurance policies are not part of the Rs. 1.5 lakhs limit for deductions under Section 80C.

The tax implications of medical insurance in India are complicated and vary from one type of policy to another. Understanding the various tax deductions and exemptions available to make the most of your insurance policy is important. It is also crucial to keep track of medical expenses incurred to claim the appropriate deductions.
