Insurance Agent Skills

Share

Becoming an insurance agent in 2024 is simple, but if you wish to succeed at what you do, a few things need to be considered. You will need more than being good at pitching to help you crack the line between someone regular and someone successful.

Let us explore some of the major skills and talents necessary for a health insurance agent to thrive and succeed in this field. But before that, let us get into what is an insurance agent.

An insurance agent represents one or several insurance providers to advise and help potential customers by choosing the right policy based on their needs, requirements, and budget.

There are two kinds of insurance agents:

  1. Exclusive Agent
  2. Independent Agent

An exclusive agent represents only one insurance provider and is typically a full-time employee for them. They have in-depth knowledge of the products they sell.

An independent agent represents multiple insurance providers and can offer a customised plan based on your needs and requirements.

Skills required to be a successful agent

As a health insurance agent, there are several skills you might require yourself while on the job. Some might be necessary, while others might help boost your career and help you reach the top. Some of these skills can be improved with hard work, while others require a natural inclination.

  1. Analytical skills

Understanding your potential customer's needs and offering them a policy based on that is easy if you build analytical skills.

  2. Communication skills

As an agent, one would need to speak with dozens of people in a day and developing communication skills can help secure leads and make you more approachable to a potential customer.

  3. Networking skills

Connecting with and networking with peers from the industry can help develop these skills and provide several leads and opportunities.

  4. Math Skills

Several times a customer needs your help to budget the policy, and you need to act as a financial advisor, so understanding math and having at least a basic understanding of it can help better the experience for your customer.

  5. Time management skills

As an agent typically has flexible work hours and is their own boss, time management skills are essential to succeed and thrive in the environment.

  6. Digital skills

Understanding technology and knowing your way through an insurance provider’s programs, mobile phones, and laptops can help you in a pinch when selling policies.

  7. Product knowledge

An in-depth knowledge of the products you sell is essential to becoming a good insurance agent.

  8. Empathy

Empathising with your customer can go a long way in helping them out and offering the best policies for their needs.

  9. Determination

Although not a skill, determination is a quality which is essential to have as an insurance agent. It allows you to keep coming back after being rejected by several people.

Still, becoming an insurance agent is not very difficult, and learning on the job is an equally good option and can provide you with the practical ground to implement these skills and thrive.

As an exclusive agent, you might be offered certain bonuses and awards for hitting and exceeding sales targets.

  3. Secondary income

Becoming a part-time agent also introduces a second source of income to people who wish to earn that extra income.

  4. Flexibility

As an agent, you will have flexibility in your working hours and can work when you want to.

  5. No investment

Becoming an agent requires zero investment, and you can start earning as early as 18 for most people.

  6. Skill Development

Practising your skills daily can help polish your skills and help you succeed and thrive in the industry.
