8 Pregnancy Myths You Should Stop Believing

Share

Pregnancy is, without question, one of the most thrilling times in a woman's life. And although it's exhilarating, it's also new. As a result, first-time mothers have many questions, which their relatives are happy to answer. However, is it wise to trust all the suggestions and blindly follow them?

Suggestions and guidance are frequently based on superstitions and misleading tales that are untrue. This gives rise to myths, the type that might be harmful to the health of the expecting mothers. That's why, today, we're debunking ten of the most popular pregnancy misconceptions that should not be believed:

1. The Expectant Mother is Supposed to Eat for Two People

This is one common myth untrue because consuming more food than required can result in weight gain in the mother and obesity in the baby. Thus, the mother should only consume food when hungry until she is satiated.

2. The Expecting Mother Should Stop Drinking Coffee or Tea

Everything in excess is terrible and so is true for caffeine. Consuming caffeine of more than 200 ml per day could harm the baby and the mother.

3. The Expecting Mother Should Not Exercise as It Would Harm the Baby

Aim for 30 minutes of physical exercise five days a week (for 150 minutes each week) throughout your pregnancy. The expecting mothers could start with easy workouts like walking and low-impact at-home exercises if they were not particularly active before becoming pregnant. Exercising is beneficial to the health and emotional wellbeing of the baby and the mother.

4. Morning Sickness Occurs Only in The Morning

During pregnancy, more than 70% of women suffer nausea and vomiting. Because the periodic hormonal shifts cause it, this lousy sensation is not restricted to the early hours of the day and can occur at any time.

5. Stretch Marks Can Be Avoided Using Serums and Creams

While certain creams can help stretch marks disappear more quickly after they've appeared, no cream will prevent stretch marks from forming if they're in the genetic makeup. On the other hand, moisturizing the skin can help it stay supple and recuperate faster.

6. The Expecting Mothers Should Not Be Around Cats

Contact with cats, according to studies, does not raise the chance of contracting toxoplasmosis (an infection that can affect unborn babies). Toxoplasmosis before pregnancy will safeguard the unborn kid due to the mother's immunity. When pregnant, however, avoid getting near the cat litter since the parasite that causes toxoplasmosis prefers to dwell in cat feces. This is why it is okay for moms to be around cats. However, it is suggested that they avoid stray cats.

7. The Look of the Tummy Can Indicate the Baby’s Sex

Every girl's body is different and grows differently in pregnancy. The shape of the belly certainly does not reveal the sex of the baby. An ultrasound is the only foolproof method that can show the sex of the baby.

8. Drinking One or Two Glasses of Wine Is Safe During the Pregnancy

There is no safe advice for red wine intake that protects against potential misuse and resultant damage to the developing child since every woman is different and metabolizes alcohol differently. It's also not good to drink while nursing since alcohol can seep into breast milk and harm the baby. As a result, it should be avoided unless the doctor specifically requests it.

It is advisable to double-check any information you come across when pregnant before acting on it. People enjoy telling tales, and they may be more than willing to share their own or what they've heard with the expecting mothers. However, because this might be incorrect information or merely induce worry, it's best to develop a list of things to avoid while pregnant, with misconceptions at the top. Before beginning or stopping doing anything new, always receive confirmation from the doctor.

Every pregnancy is unique and special one should not worry about it; instead, this period should be enjoyed and cherished. This is also the best time to ensure that the health insurance covers the expenses incurred in the regular check-ups and medications.
