Everybody has sinuses, but not everyone suffers from sinusitis. Often when we get sick, we say we have ‘sinus’ but what we mean is that we have a sinus infection or sinusitis. Remedies for sinus exist, but more on that later.
So, What is Sinus?
Sinuses are the hollow spaces within the bones between your eyes (ethmoid sinuses), in your forehead (frontal sinuses), and behind the cheekbones (maxillary sinuses). These cavities are lined with a soft tissue called mucosa, which produces mucus. This thin layer of mucus prevents the tissue from drying out, and acts as a barrier between the tissue and the air, preventing infection by viruses and bacteria. Even in a healthy person, mucus exists and is beneficial. It prevents bacteria, viruses, dust, allergens, and pollutants from entering the body through the nasal cavity. But too much mucus can cause problems such as sinusitis.
What is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis is the inflammation of the sinus tissue by viruses, bacteria, or even fungi. When the nasal cavity gets inflamed, the passageway is blocked with excessive fluid build-up. This becomes a breeding ground for viruses and bacteria, causing further infection and discomfort.
What are the Symptoms of Sinusitis?
The symptoms of sinusitis are similar to that of a cold
- Facial pain or pressure
- Stuffy nose
- Runny nose
- Diminished sense of smell
- Cough or congestion
In addition, you may also have:
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Dental pain
What are your Sinus Infection Treatment Options?
Acute sinusitis lasts for a maximum of 4 weeks, while subacute sinusitis lasts up to 12 weeks. Chronic sinusitis symptoms last 12 weeks or longer. And finally, recurrent sinusitis occurs several times a year. Much like the cold, which is caused by the rhinovirus, there isn’t an over-the-counter medicine that works against the virus itself.
Viral sinusitis usually dissipates by itself, depending on the type you’re afflicted with. However, if it is a bacterial infection, then antibiotics may be prescribed for a specific number of days. For allergens, an antihistamine may be prescribed, while fungal infections can be fought with antifungal medicine. Sometimes, a doctor may prescribe steroids with antibiotics, depending on the severity of the symptoms.
Most treatment options focus on alleviating the symptoms. And that’s something you can do at home as well.
Home remedies for sinus treatment
These methods work in reducing the severity of your symptoms
1. Stay Hydrated
Colds often happen in the winters, when the air is drier. Furthermore, if you have a fever, your appetite will be diminished, causing you to drink less water than you normally would. Fighting the fever dehydrates the body, and there’s water lost as sweat and mucus as well. That’s why staying hydrated is recommended when you have the flu or sinus infection. Do note that there are no studies that show that drinking water helps fight the infection directly. But we know that dehydration adversely affects the body.
2. Use a Room Humidifier
As mentioned earlier, the mucosa needs to be kept moist by the mucus to prevent infection. In drier climates, it’s easier for the virus and bacteria to infect the tissue. With a humidifier in your room, the extra moisture in the air makes it easier to breathe.
3. Nasal Irrigation
Decongesting nasal sprays are available over-the-counter, while some may even contain steroids. These can help reduce inflammation and reduce sinus pressure. However, do not use non-steroidal sprays over three days in a row, as it may cause ‘rebound congestion’. Limit your daily dose as well. Alternatively, you can use a neti pot with a saltwater solution to clear your nasal cavity. Adjust the amount of salt, temperature of water, and frequency of use as per your comfort.
4. Drink Warm Fluids
Drinking warm water or tea, has often been a remedy prescribed by the elders in the family. While there’s no scientific study to support that fact, studies have shown a psychological effect in relief from the symptoms of sinus infection. Just holding a warm glass of water and inhaling the vapours brings about a positive psychological change in nasal blockage. Have warm water, tea, or black coffee, and avoid sugar & alcohol.
5. Exercise Everyday
Exercise has proven benefits in improving your immune system. This is, however, a more preventative remedy than a solution. But exercising will compel you to drink more water, and also release endorphins that will make you feel better. But, if you’re tired, and have symptoms below the neck, like chest congestions, then it’s best to get some rest instead. Listen to your body, and do what it prefers.
6. Get Some Rest
In stark contrast to the previous point, sometimes it’s best to just rest. Resting will give your body the energy to direct its efforts in fighting the infection. It’s good for your immune system.
7. Regular Medical Consultations
Visit your doctor regularly, especially if you have recurrent sinusitis. Your doctor will know your medical history and will provide the treatment for you. If your condition worsens, visit a network hospital of your health insurance provider.
If you do not have a health insurance plan, consider the Niva Bupa Health Premia comprehensive health insurance plan that covers pre-existing conditions and pre & post hospitalisation treatment costs. Besides, the remedies for sinus infection mentioned above, follow a healthy diet to reduce the severity and frequency of illnesses. Eating the right food will keep your internals in good shape, while also helping you maintain better mental health as well.
