International Women's Day 2025

Share

Every year on March 8th, the world pauses to celebrate International Women’s Day—a day that honours the achievements of women and ignites conversations about the ongoing journey towards gender equality. This year carries an even deeper significance as we mark the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a landmark moment in the global pursuit of women's rights. The theme, "Equal rights. Equal opportunities. Equal power.," is not just a slogan; it is a reminder of the aspirations, struggles, and triumphs of countless women who have paved the way for future generations.

A Journey Through Time

Imagine a young woman in the early 1900s, standing in a crowded factory, her hands calloused from endless hours of labour. She looks around and sees other women like her—hardworking, determined, yet undervalued. Their voices are hushed, their wages a fraction of what men earn, and their aspirations dismissed. But she refuses to accept this as her fate. With unwavering courage, she joins thousands of others demanding change. This spirit of defiance, of challenging the status quo, gave birth to what we now commemorate as International Women’s Day.

The movement started in the early 20th century, a time of social and political upheaval. Women across the world began to push for better working conditions, voting rights, and equality. In 1909, the first National Woman’s Day was observed in the United States, igniting a fire that soon spread globally. By 1911, more than a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland were rallying for women's rights, laying the foundation for the change we see today.

Progress Worth Celebrating

Fast forward to the present, and the world looks significantly different. The dreams of those early activists have materialised in numerous ways:

  • Education: Girls now have access to education like never before. Many countries have achieved or are approaching gender parity in primary and secondary education, opening doors that were once tightly shut.
  • Political Representation: More women are stepping into leadership roles, with female representation in national parliaments doubling since 1995. The corridors of power, once dominated by men, now echo with diverse voices and perspectives.
  • Economic Participation: Women are entering the workforce in increasing numbers, shaping industries, and contributing significantly to economic growth. Their presence in entrepreneurship and leadership positions continues to rise.

These achievements, however, are only part of the story.

The Roadblocks That Remain

Picture a woman working tirelessly at her job, yet earning less than her male counterpart for the same work. She shoulders household responsibilities, faces barriers in career advancement, and fears for her safety when walking home alone at night. Despite decades of progress, these challenges persist.

  • Violence Against Women: The harsh reality remains that women continue to face violence at alarming rates. A United Nations report highlights that every 10 minutes, a woman or girl is killed by a partner or family member. Conflict-related sexual violence has also surged, demanding urgent attention and action.
  • Economic Disparities: The gender pay gap is still a stark reality. Women remain overrepresented in low-paying, unstable jobs, with many forced to leave the workforce due to caregiving responsibilities.
  • Health Inequities: Women’s health issues are often overlooked or underfunded. Access to quality reproductive healthcare, maternal services, and screenings for life-threatening diseases remains limited in many parts of the world.

Investing in Women's Health: A Cornerstone of Empowerment

Health is a fundamental right, yet for many women, access to comprehensive healthcare is a challenge. Consider a young mother navigating a complex healthcare system, struggling to afford the care she needs. Or an elderly woman facing a critical illness without financial support. Investing in women's health is not just a moral imperative—it is an economic and social necessity.

The Role of Health Insurance in Women’s Well-being

Health insurance is a game-changer for women, providing financial security in times of medical need. The growing awareness of its importance is evident:

  • Rising Awareness: Data indicates a 40% increase in women purchasing Best Health Insurance Plans in the fiscal year 2024 compared to the previous year, reflecting a shift towards proactive financial planning.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Tailored health insurance plans now offer maternity benefits, coverage for critical illnesses such as breast cancer and cervical cancer, and regular health check-ups.
  • Financial Independence: Owning an individual health insurance plan enables women to make healthcare decisions without dependence on family or employer-provided coverage.

A Global Push for Women's Health

Governments and organisations are recognising the importance of targeted investments in women's health:

  • Policy Reforms: Recent initiatives have allocated substantial funds towards enhancing healthcare options for women, reducing costs, and improving accessibility.
  • Better Access to Contraceptives: For the first time in decades, new contraceptive options have been made more affordable, empowering women with greater reproductive choices.

The Path Forward

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we must move beyond words and commit to real change. The future we envision requires:

  • Policy Advocacy: Stronger policies that promote gender equality in healthcare, education, and employment.
  • Health Investments: Ensuring women have access to quality healthcare services, from preventive care to critical illness treatment.
  • Financial Literacy: Educating women on the importance of financial independence and health insurance as a tool for security.

A Future Without Barriers

International Women’s Day is more than a date on the calendar; it is a call to action. The journey towards equality is far from over, but every step forward is a step closer to a world where women and girls can realise their full potential without limitations. By investing in their health, supporting their ambitions, and breaking down barriers, we are not just empowering women—we are building a stronger, more equitable world for everyone.

As we reflect on how far we have come, let us pledge to continue pushing for a future where equal rights, equal opportunities, and equal power are not aspirations but realities. The story of progress is still being written, and together, we hold the pen.
