What is a Thyroid gland, you might ask? The thyroid gland is an organ that’s located on the front side of the neck, wrapped around the windpipe. It is a butterfly-shaped organ and is part of the endocrine system, which forms an intricate network of glands. The endocrine system coordinates many of our body’s activities. The thyroid gland specifically manages the metabolism part of our body. It looks after healthy metabolic function being carried out. Metabolism is the process through which the food that we intake is converted to energy. With the help of a few specific hormones, the thyroid controls our metabolism. These hormones are T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine).
These hormones tell the body’s cells how much energy to use. This is all supervised by the pituitary gland, which is situated in the centre of the skull below our brains. It regulates the presence of thyroid hormones in our bloodstream. When this gland senses irregularity in the production of thyroid hormones, it adjusts it with its own hormone, known as TSH or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. The TSH will signal the thyroid gland to function in the proper way.
The underproduction and overproduction of thyroid hormone cause various symptoms of this disease called thyroid gland disorder. The symptoms of thyroid include fatigue, weight loss, weight gain, and irritability. The common thyroid problems include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Grave’s disease, goitre (enlarged thyroid) and thyroid nodules. The main types of thyroid are Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism.
Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism
In hyperthyroidism, there is overproduction in the thyroid gland. It produces an excess of thyroid hormone. Due to this, all bodily functions speed up. It can affect anyone – men, women, infants, teenagers, and the elderly. It is estimated that forty two million people in India are diagnosed with thyroid gland disorders and go for its treatment. If you are a female, your risk of getting thyroid increases by five to eight times more than a man.
Hyperthyroidism can lead to the following conditions in thyroid:- Grave’s disease, Nodules, Thyroiditis and excessive iodine.
In hypothyroidism, the conditions that can arise include Thyroiditis, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, post-partum thyroiditis, Iodine deficiency and a non-functioning thyroid gland. Now we come to the symptoms of these thyroid conditions.
Symptoms of Thyroid Disorder
The symptoms of hyperthyroidism include: Trouble sleeping, weight loss, enlarged goitre, irregular menstrual cycle, tremors and muscle weakness, sensitive to heat and having eye problems.
The symptoms of hypothyroidism include: Feeling fatigue, hair loss, weight gain, forgetfulness, heavy and frequent menstrual cycles, intolerance to cold, hoarse voice and having dry and coarse hairs.
Tests for Thyroid
There are different ways to diagnose thyroid disorder. These are blood tests, imaging tests and physical checkups. Blood tests are the most definitive way of diagnosing if you have any kind of thyroid or not. In this test, there are a few specific blood tests that will be done. In the first case, they check TSH or thyroid-stimulating hormone presence. Next, they can do the test where they look for T4. The other tests are FT3, FT4 and T3 tests. Additional blood tests might include thyroid antibodies, calcitonin, and thyroglobulin.
Treatments for Thyroid
The goal of any doctor or healthcare provider after they diagnose their patient with thyroid disorder is to start thyroid gland disorder treatment. These can be done by various procedures. The first step is to introduce anti-thyroid drugs for hyperthyroidism. These stop the production of thyroid hormones in our bodies. For hypothyroidism, we have thyroid replacement medication, in which a man-made drug puts the thyroid hormone back in the body.
For hyperthyroidism, there is radioactive iodine treatment, in which the cells of your thyroid gland are damaged so that they don’t start overproducing thyroid hormones. Next is using beta-blockers, which don’t exactly treat thyroid but help in keeping the symptoms in check. Then comes one of the most permanent solutions or say treatment for thyroid. It is surgery. It is known as a thyroidectomy. This will stop the gland from creating thyroid hormones. Although you might need to take thyroid replacement medication for the rest of your life.
