There is no denying the fact that medical insurance offers immense benefits when it comes to ensuring financial security during illnesses. However, due to the historically low insurance penetration in India, citizens needed an additional push to become interested in such plans.
That’s why the government has provided a tax incentive to motivate citizens to purchase a health policy. The tax benefit is given in the form of a deduction in respect of health insurance premia under section 80D. This blog will explain the various provisions under this tax law and the factors you must consider to become eligible for it.
Understanding Deduction in Respect of Health Insurance Premia under Section 80D
Section 80D under the Income Tax Act 1961 allows individuals and HUFs to claim a deduction for the amount paid as medical insurance premiums. The health policy can be taken by the taxpayer for their own self, spouse, parents, or dependent children. Thus, section 80D considers the entire family’s welfare.
The government also introduced a ₹5,000 deduction for preventive health checkups under the same section in 2013-14. As citizens avail regular health checkups, they can identify any disease and can take timely corrective actions. This further promotes better health outcomes for the entire population.
Amount of Deduction Allowed
Deductions under section 80D are subject to certain limits. These limitations change depending on the policy's intended beneficiaries and their age. For a better understanding of the maximum amount allowed as a deduction in different cases, have a look at the table below:
Points to Note for Claiming Deduction in Respect of Health Insurance Premia under Section 80D
Section 80D deductions help reduce the tax burden on citizens while promoting the importance of insurance coverage, especially considering the rising healthcare costs. However, you must keep the following points in mind while paying the premium and subsequently filing the ITR (Income Tax Return):
- The premium must be paid in a mode other than cash. Cash payments are, however, allowed in case of preventive health checkups.
- The premium must be paid for a policy taken for self, spouse, dependent children, and parents. Thus, relatives like siblings, in-laws, etc., are not covered. Similarly, premiums paid on behalf of working children are not deductible.
- Employers can’t claim this deduction for the premiums paid on group medical insurance policies for employees.
- Only the premium amount can be deducted. GST and cess charges levied on the gross amount are not allowed.
- Though no documentary proof is mandated by the government, taxpayers should ideally maintain a record of premium receipts, hospital bills, medical expense receipts, etc.
Summing Up
The provision of deduction in respect of health insurance premiums under Section 80D aims to encourage individuals and families to secure themselves against medical expenses by purchasing health policies. By offering tax benefits, the government supports citizens in their journey toward better health and financial well-being. Taxpayers are advised to consult with financial advisors or tax professionals to ensure they are aware of the most current regulations and how they apply to their specific situations.
